Japan is located in the North Pacific off the coast of Russia and the Korean peninsula. Japan consists of four main larger islands and more than 4000 smaller islands. The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. Banks and public offices close on national holidays. The period from April 29 to May 6, with its three national holidays, is known as Golden Week. Millions of Japanese take the whole week off to travel, so be prepared for extreme crowding on trains and in hotels. Two other crowded periods are August 13-16 and New Year. Some 60 major airlines serve Narita International Airport, 67.5 km east of Tokyo while Haneda Airport serves mostly domestic flights. In Tokyo, people live by the elaborate and efficient network of trains and subways. Taxi fare is around $6 for the first 2 km and rises steeply thereafter.
